Bus advertising in Kerala: a buyer's guide

What bus advertising in Kerala looks like today, the formats you can buy, how KSRTC and private buses differ, what decides the price, and the questions to ask before you pay anyone. Written by Oriented Networks, which runs advertising screens inside buses in Kerala.

1. The three kinds of bus advertising

When people in Kerala say "bus advertising" they can mean three quite different things. Each reaches a different audience, so it helps to decide which one you want before you ask for prices.

FormatWho sees it, and how
Outside the busFull wraps, side panels and rear panels. Seen by people on the road, at stops and in traffic, usually for a few seconds as the bus passes. Good for wide, general awareness of a name or logo.
Printed, insidePosters, seat backs, grab handles and tickets. Seen by passengers for the whole ride, but the message stays the same until someone visits the bus to change it.
Screens insideHD screens that play video or picture advertisements in turn. Seen by seated passengers for the length of their journey, with movement and sound. The advertisement, its hours and how often it plays can be changed remotely.

Many campaigns combine them. A common pattern is outside branding for reach and screens inside for a fuller message, an offer and a phone number.

2. KSRTC buses and private buses

KSRTC, the state transport corporation, runs long-distance, town and city services across Kerala. Advertising on KSRTC buses is sold through the agencies KSRTC appoints, and the formats and rights on offer change when those arrangements are renewed, so ask the seller which buses and formats they hold rights to today.

Private buses run a large share of city and town routes, for example many routes in and around Kochi. Advertising on them is arranged with the operators or with a network that works with them. Screens inside private buses are usually sold by such networks, route by route.

The right choice depends on where your customers travel. A shop near a busy city corridor may gain more from the few private routes that pass it than from a statewide package.

3. What decides the cost

There is no single rate card for bus advertising in Kerala. These are the things that move the price:

  • Format. A full wrap costs more to print and fit than a rear panel; screen time is priced by plays rather than by area.
  • Number of buses and routes. More buses, or busier routes, cost more.
  • Length of the campaign. Most sellers price by the month; longer bookings often cost less per month.
  • For screens: plays and hours. How many times a day the advertisement plays, and whether it runs all day or only at chosen hours.
  • Season and demand. Festival months such as Onam and Vishu fill up first.
  • Production. Printing and fitting for outside branding; making the video if you do not have one.

Always ask for a written quote that names the buses or routes, the dates, and for screens the number of plays a day. Our current packages are on the packages page.

4. Ten questions to ask before you book

  1. Which buses and routes exactly, and are they running today?
  2. For screens: how many screens are active, and on how many buses?
  3. How many times a day will my advertisement play, and between which hours?
  4. How long can my advertisement be, and does it play with sound?
  5. How many other advertisements share the same loop?
  6. Will I get proof of play, a record of every play with bus, date and time?
  7. Can I change the advertisement during the campaign, and how fast?
  8. What happens when a bus is off the road or loses signal?
  9. Can you make the advertisement, in Malayalam if needed, and at what cost?
  10. What exactly is included in the price, and what is extra?

5. Making an advertisement that works on a bus

  • Say who you are in the first three seconds. Passengers glance up and down; show the name and the offer early.
  • Keep it short. 10 to 30 seconds is enough; one message per advertisement.
  • Make text large and few. A screen seen from a seat a few metres away needs big, high-contrast words.
  • Work without sound. Buses are noisy; add captions so the message lands even when the sound does not.
  • Speak the passengers' language. Malayalam, English, or both on screen.
  • End with one clear action. A phone or WhatsApp number, a location, or an offer code, held on screen long enough to read.

6. Measuring results

Proof of play tells you the advertisement ran. To see what it brought in, give the bus campaign its own way to respond: a separate WhatsApp number or message keyword, an offer code mentioned only on the bus, or a simple "How did you hear about us?" at the counter. Compare enquiries in the weeks before, during and after the campaign.

7. Where Oriented Networks fits

Oriented Networks runs HD advertising screens inside buses. Today our screens are running in Idukki, on bus routes from Adimaly, and we take bookings from businesses anywhere in Kerala as routes open. Advertisers choose the buses or routes, the days, the hours and how often the advertisement plays, see every play in their own dashboard, and can change the advertisement at any time. We can make the advertisement in Malayalam or English. We do not sell outside branding or KSRTC panels.

8. Questions

What types of bus advertising are there in Kerala?

Three main kinds: branding on the outside of the bus (full wraps, side and rear panels), printed advertising inside the bus (posters, seat backs, tickets), and digital screens inside the bus that play video or picture advertisements to passengers.

Is it better to advertise on KSRTC or private buses?

It depends on where your customers travel. KSRTC runs long-distance and town services across the state and sells advertising through its appointed agencies. In cities such as Kochi many routes are run by private buses, where advertising is arranged with the operators or a network that works with them.

How much does bus advertising cost in Kerala?

There is no single price. Cost depends on the format, the number of buses and routes, how long the campaign runs and, for screens, how often the advertisement plays. Ask every seller for a written quote that states the buses, routes, dates and plays included.

How do I know a bus screen advertisement actually played?

Ask for proof of play: a record from each screen of every time the advertisement played, with the bus, the date, the time and how long it ran. Oriented Networks shows this in each advertiser's dashboard.

Who offers advertising on screens inside buses in Kerala?

Several networks sell screen time inside buses in Kerala. Oriented Networks is one of them: its HD screens run inside buses in Idukki on routes from Adimaly, it takes bookings from across Kerala, and it records every play.
